A Letter from our President
====================================
A Message from Charles...
Dear people of the Stair Industry,
I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to our web site and to personally invite you to join the Stairway
Manufacturers' Association. Our association is made up of a wide variety of people from the Stair Industry. Our
members range from installers working out of the back of their trucks to some the largest parts manufacturers in
the United States.
In the past couple of years the Stair Industry has taken on some very dramatic changes. Parts are being manufactured
better and faster than ever before. But the one thing most affecting our industry are changes in the building codes.
Rapid and drastic changes in the building codes will change the way we operate our businesses forever. Building
codes are becoming more and more restrictive. The SMA has been very successful in fighting these battles, but we
need to continue to fight the battles if we expect to win the war.
There are a handful of people who are mapping out the future of our industry, with no regard of what is best for
us or our customers. With people like yourself we can work as a team to take control of our industry and determine
our own future. The goal of the SMA is " to help improve the safety record of stairways while preserving those
aesthetic elements that have made the staircase an enduring architectural institution".
Please take the time to read over the information we have provided.
Thank you for taking the time to visit our web site, and I look forward to working with you in the future.
Sincerely,
Charles Hampton
President

SMA History and Goals
====================================
History
The SMA is a broad based industry association officially formed in 1988. Our members include stair parts manufacturers,
stair builders, installers and millwork distributors and dealers. We are an industry organization run by industry
people.
Our primary focus is to represent the millwork industry to the building development groups. We are actively involved
with all three model code groups as well as CABO, BCMC, and the accessibility movement.
Because the SMA represents the people who build, install and sell the stairways in this country, it is our job
to defend, test, write standards and promote products that insure the growth and prosperity of our industry.
Goals
To legitimize and organize the stair industry with support and involvement from all the disparate elements in order
to formulate and follow a plan to insure industry growth and prosperity.
To become a leader in the code change process by actively participating at all levels.
To write standards to insure that design and installation criteria meet or exceed the minimum standard set by the
codes.
To disseminate to members information impacting all facets of stairbuilding and millwork usage.
